When my daughter was diagnosed with myopia at age 7, I was devastated. I'm myopic myself (-5.00D) and know exactly what living with high myopia means. When the optometrist suggested Ortho-K, I was sceptical — but I also knew I didn't want her to follow the same path I did.

Two years later, her prescription has barely changed. It's gone from -2.00D to -2.25D — that's it. At her rate before Ortho-K, we'd have expected at least -3.50D by now.

The first week was challenging — getting her to put lenses in at bedtime took about 20 minutes each night. By week two, she was doing it herself in five minutes. Now it's completely routine, like brushing her teeth. The best part? She plays soccer and swims without worrying about glasses. She's just... a normal kid.

💡 Jennifer's tip

Make it a team effort from the start. We made a chart and she got a small reward after the first week of successful lens wear. Now she actually reminds ME when it's time for her eyes!

My son Arjun was progressing at almost a dioptre per year. His optometrist warned us,如果不加以控制,到他十几岁时他可能会变成高度近视。这对我来说是个警钟,因为我自己的近视度数也很高。

We started Ortho-K when he was just turned 9. He's now 10½ and his prescription has stabilised completely. The optometrist says his axial length growth has slowed dramatically. We couldn't be happier with the decision.

The practical side is easier than we expected. We were worried about sleepovers and camps, but Arjun just brings his kit and it's never been an issue. The cost was significant upfront — about $2,400 for the fitting and first lenses — but when I calculate it against the lifetime cost of progressive myopia, it feels like a sound investment.

With three myopic children, we've tried everything. Our eldest started with Ortho-K when she was 11 after she became self-conscious about glasses. Our twins started on MiYOSMART glasses at age 8 when their myopia first appeared.

Five years on, our eldest is now 16 with a prescription of -3.00D. Without intervention, at her progression rate, she'd likely be -7.00D by now. The twins, who started intervention younger, are both under -2.00D at ages 10 and 13.

What I've learned: early intervention matters enormously. The difference between our eldest (who started at 11) and the twins (who started at 8) is significant in their final outcomes. If I could go back, I'd have started the eldest on Ortho-K the moment she was diagnosed at age 9.

💡 Sarah's tip

Don't wait to "see how it goes." By the time you realise it's getting worse, you've lost valuable years. Get a second opinion if your optometrist suggests "just monitoring" — there are effective interventions available.

My daughter was diagnosed at her school eye test — she'd been struggling to see the board for months but didn't want to tell us. By the time we got to the optometrist, she was already -1.75D. We felt terrible.

The optometrist recommended Ortho-K immediately, noting that starting at age 8 with moderate myopia gave us the best possible window for effective control. We didn't hesitate — we'd already done our research.

One year on, her prescription is stable at -1.75D. The optometrist says this is exactly the outcome we'd hoped for. She's a confident, active little girl who can see perfectly during the day without any correction. Swimming lessons, dance class, everything — no glasses holding her back.
