Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Ortho-K and Lens For Life.

What is Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea. By morning, lenses are removed and clear vision is maintained throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts. It's like braces for your eyes.

Is Ortho-K safe for children?

Yes! Ortho-K is FDA-approved for children as young as 8 years old and has been used safely for decades. When proper hygiene is maintained and lenses are used as directed, complications are extremely rare. Our optometrists are specially trained in fitting Ortho-K lenses for children.

At what age can my child start Ortho-K?

Most children can start Ortho-K from age 8, though it depends on their maturity and ability to handle lenses responsibly. Some younger children are suitable with parental assistance. Our optometrist will assess whether your child is a good candidate during the initial consultation.

How long does it take to work?

Most children achieve clear vision within 3-7 days of consistent nightly wear. Some notice improvement after the very first night! Full correction typically takes 1-2 weeks.

Does my child still need glasses during the day?

No! Once Ortho-K takes effect, your child will enjoy clear vision throughout the day without any glasses or daytime contacts. That's the magic of Ortho-K—freedom during waking hours!

What happens if my child doesn't wear the lenses for a night?

The corneal reshaping is temporary. If your child misses a night, vision may be slightly reduced the following day. Simply resume wearing the lenses that night, and vision will clear again.

How much does Ortho-K cost?

Lens For Life offers Ortho-K starting at /month through our subscription plan. This includes custom lenses, regular check-ups, and ongoing support. Initial fitting is a one-time fee. See our pricing page for full details.

Is Ortho-K covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Medicare provides rebates for optometry consultations. Private health insurance may cover a portion of Ortho-K lenses under extras cover, depending on your policy. We can provide itemised receipts for claiming.

How does Ortho-K slow myopia?

Studies show Ortho-K can reduce myopia progression by 40-60% compared to children wearing standard glasses or contacts. The exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but it's believed to reduce peripheral hyperopic defocus, which signals the eye to stop growing longer.

What if Ortho-K doesn't work for my child?

Ortho-K works for most children with mild to moderate myopia (up to -6.00). During the initial assessment, we'll determine if your child is a suitable candidate. If Ortho-K isn't appropriate, we can discuss alternative myopia management options.
